The hub is where the Internet signal will begin. This signal then gets sent to the satellite dish that’s currently orbiting the Earth from you dish. The Net As We Know It

Most people have no idea how the internet works; aside from the vague idea that it involves bouncing data off of satellites. While this rings of truth, such an oversimplification of the web takes away the significance of communications technology, such as Cisco’s most recent accomplishment: a functional space-based router.

How It Works
“Network” is a term that refers to a system of interconnected computers. These connections, wired and/or wireless, and enable the computers to communicate, sending and receiving data per user commands. However, this data is not sent in a complete form, but rather segmented by the sending computer and pieced together by the receiver.

These pieces of data, or “packets,” are transferred one-at-a-time, under the direction of a “router.” Routers determine the order and route the data travels. As the network grows, more routers are used to direct data traffic.

At a certain point a computer on this network may wish to connect to another computer on a different network. Internet Service Providers enable this connection by agreeing to link their data traffic at certain points. These points are called Network Access Points (NAPS).

But what about the satellites? The satellites are simply mirrors, catching and reflecting packets between physically distant routers. They do not actually open or direct packets–yet.

The Problems
1. The problem with this system is in its limited mobility. Wireless devices have to be within range of a receiver to access or send packets; which, in practical terms, means weak signal in your own home and no cellular service when you need it most.

2. Packets are not routed and given priority based on urgency. A streaming video, may be divided into thousands of packets, each routed through a slightly different path. The result? Slow or stuttering video for you, the viewer.

It won’t be long before most of the world settles into the post-holiday financial doldrums. While giving and receiving gifts is one of the highlights of the season, sometimes cause serious financial fallout occurs afterward. Cisco Casts A Broader Net

Cisco is attempting to change the way we communicate. They call it IRIS (Internet Routing In Space), and it is exactly what it sounds like–space-based routers. Currently, internet access is largely dependent on the presence of ground-based (terrestrial) receivers and routers. Satellites are an out-dated part of this system, functioning on circuit switching technology. This system creates a temporary connections between communications nodes that mimics an electrical circuit. The result is a “bent pipe” connection, which is slow and inefficient.

IRIS changes this system my updating the circuit switching system to a normal internet protocol (IP) router, the same kind used when establishing normal internet connections. While the concept may not seem revolutionary, creating a router durable and powerful enough to function in space has taken several years of work. Testing will continue for the next twelve months to ensure the viability of IRIS. Government and commercial agencies have already presented Cisco with draft contracts for the use of the technology.

Benefits of IRIS

1. Wider coverage for wireless devices. Receiver/transmitter towers and peer-to-peer routers are still the primary means of accessing the internet wirelessly. IRIS is capable of establishing direct connections between wireless devices and terrestrial computers. Think of it like an express lane on a highway.

2. Direct connection. This direct connection provides security and stability for sensitive government and private commercial applications. Of course, this priority service is still too expensive for the general public.

3. Faster service, less latency. Circuit switching technology is only capable of transferring kilobits (Kbit) of data. Whereas the new IP router will transfer in Megabits (Mbit).

4. Eliminates the need for a teleport. An artifact of circuit switching technology, teleports cost money to set-up and maintain.

At the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference in Redmond, WA, Microsoft released an updated test version for its latest browser, Internet Explorer 9. The company designed the browser with the hopes that the new design will help Microsoft recapture some of the market it has lost to other browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

According to Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO and keynote speaker, the company designed IE 9 so it functions more like an application. The test the company released allowed developers to view websites, but it was not a full-version. Microsoft did release full-version beta tests in early 2010.

The conference is also cluing people into Microsoft’s plans for the upcoming months and years. The company is still working on improvements for Windows Azure, and the new Windows Phone should have over 1,000 apps when it goes on sale in November. Windows 7 and cloud computing are also in the works.

Based on the rapid success of cloud computing and it popularity, many people expected the company to focus on it. Ballmer said Microsoft plans to use the cloud as the backplane for application development. With the cloud, Microsoft hopes to unveil better platforms with more power. Much of the new systems will also be using an upgrade for HTML. Developers expect HTML 5 to offer more flexibility in creating new programs.

While Microsoft expects to see promising results from the cloud and from its new line of phones, it’s too early to tell whether the company’s latest browser option will appease consumers. Many quit using IE 8 because of its vulnerability to viruses, spamware, and malware. IE 9 will need to address this and offer improvement in order to hook users. It will also have to offer tools comparable to other browsers, such as Google’s Chrome, which now offers everything standard with Internet Explorer. If the company delivers, though, it should expect to gain back some of its previous fans.

Categorize Your Content

Web content is data that is available for viewing on the internet. Content may consist of text, images, audio and video or a combination of all of these in the form of an application. In order to view this content your computer must transfer data packets from another computer through a network of routers. So would opening a web page be considered downloading or streaming?

Why Does It Matter?
Keeping track of your system’s activities is crucial to ensuring overall health. Being able to recognize the signs of an unauthorized download and distinguish it from an unwanted stream allows you to be in control of your browsing experience. Stopping unwanted processes can prevent the spread of contamination and speed system performance.

The key distinction that separates different types of transfers is the direction of packet traffic and the amount of time the information is stored on your system.

Downloading
When a file is transferred from a remote computer to your local system and saved to play on something like your vlc media player, you are downloading. Downloaded files are stored in the “Downloads” folder on the C:/ drive unless the user expressly directs them to another location. Past, current and pending downloads are visible in the downloads queue of your web browser.

Uploading
Uploading is the process by which a file is moved to a remote computer. While this may mean files are moved from your local computer to a remote location, initiating a transfer from one remote server to another is also considered uploading. No browser provides upload history. To view a record of the files you have uploaded consult the website or computer you were sending files to. For example, photographs uploaded to facebook’s server will be stored in your profile.

Sideloading
Transfers from one computer to another within a local network are called sideloads. This is because the process involves horizontal communication with little to no movement up the network hierarchy.

Streaming
Streaming content is the same as downloading, except that files are only temporarily saved on your computer. Streams are also unique in that they may be viewed before the entire file has arrived. (i.e., Data packets are viewed in segments, not as a whole.)

When West Virginia received $126 million from a federal grant to build a high-speed Internet infrastructure, it decided to use the funds to extend the current telephone lines. However, this plan has come under attack by Citynet, a local telephone service provider. The company has created a website and is taking out ads to try to rally the residents of the state to pay attention to this issue.

According to Jim Martin, the CEO of Citynet, the state’s decision regarding the high-speed Internet infrastructure may cripple the state for years to come. His belief is that West Virginia needs to use the funds to build a middle-mile solution capable of delivering high-speed connectivity rather than relying on an outdated model.

From the moment Citynet learned about the state’s plan, it has been lobbying for changes. Martin has called the state and asked it to suspend using the grant; however, the state has not responded to the request. Citynet hopes the citizens will join with him to ensure the state uses the funds in a way that better incorporates the government’s plan for them.

Martin backs his support for a middle-mile solution by highlighting the benefits to Internet service, which include better quality, faster connection speeds, and higher capacity at a reduce rate. As a company awarded for bringing Internet solutions to areas with limited connectivity, Citynet may be in the best position to lead this fight.

The state was to use the grant, provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, to improve the Internet structure for over 700,000 households and 110,000 businesses. In its application for the grant, the state indicated it would be building a middle-mile infrastructure, which is exactly what Citynet hopes the state will do. However, the state amended it plan to focus on a “last-mile” program, which would benefit a publicly traded phone company, Frontier Communications, hoping to capture most of the business from the endeavor.

There are so many uses for the internet. Many that I don’t even know about I am sure. When my cousin told me about how he uses the Internet to help him bet on sporting events I was really surprised. I guess I never really thought that anyone could help anyone else get ahead when it came to betting. Anyway, sports betting sites do exist.

I thought I had decided on a baby name, but now I am not so sure. I have done some searching on the internet and found hundreds of baby naming sites. I can’t believe the crazy names I can find online. I would love some suggestions from all of you as to what you think the baby’s name should be. I can’t promise I will consider any of them, but I will read them.

Oh, I did have one thought about considering your suggestions for baby names. If you can figure out a way to go through labor for me and make sure that I am the exact same size as I was before I was pregnant before I walk out of the hospital, I will let you name the baby whatever you want!

Internet Access Options

Even if you weren’t around to hear it, you know what a dial-up internet connection sounds like. Movies and commercials are rife with jokes about the antiquated internet access technology. Most people have switched to a more updated connection and left it at that. But with separate service and data plans for your cell phone, home computer and mobile devices it may be time to cut back on the expenses and go back to basics-or take out a third mortgage.

Dial-Up
This is the oldest and most widely used type of internet connection. It works by connecting a computer to an Internet service provider (ISP) using an analog modem and POTS (plain old telephone system). Even though cable and satellite internet have since expanded their coverage, dial-up still supports a large number of customers in remote regions. Dial-up service is inexpensive to set-up and maintain; and the existing POTS infrastructure is extensive, making internet access through dial-up widely available. However, the average speed is only 56 kbps. This makes dial-up too slow for certain activities such as online gaming and video streaming.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
DSL internet uses the same physical network as a dial-up connection but produces speed from 256 kb to 24 mb per second.

T1
T1 lines use existing POTS infrastructure as the framework for laying fiberoptic or copper cabling. This cable must be physically connected to a network router to create a connection making it an expensive service to obtain. However a t1 line may support data rates up to 1.544 megabits per second.

Cable
Cable connects consumers using a radio frequency signal similar to the over-the-air (radio-wave) method used in traditional television broadcasting. This signal is transmitted to the computer or web-enabled device physically, through fixed optical fibers or coaxial cables located on-site. Cable internet can be expensive as it requires the use of a transmitter near the subscriber; the subscriber essentially pays for the maintenance and upkeep of this tower.) Also this technology is not able to conquer the problem of “the last mile” providing access to individuals in remote locations.

It was meant to be an idle search, a rare waste of hours, as your duties as a parent leave you with little time for indulgences. With people spending more and more time on websites like facebook and MySpace the power of online gaming has truly come into its own. According to a study conducted by Ball State University in 2000, the average person spent about nine hours online. Keep in mind that this was a time before Kindle, iPads and web-enabled coffee mugs. (No, we don’t actually have those yet.) Add ten years and technological developments like the latest models of the BlackBerry, iPhone and Android and you’ve got an entire generation of kids who literally live online.

The games they play may not seem like much to a serious gamer, but the old-school simplicity and zero learning curve gives these time-sappers undeniable appeal.

You can find free games on social networking sites, such as facebook and MySpace, or at online arcades. Online arcades are indexes of web-based and downloadable games. While many of these sites offer game play for a monthly or per-use fee. There are plenty of free, publicly-accessible arcades that have a decent offering.

The service will also benefit locals in the Khumbu Valley who will have access to it. Prior to the installation, only one third of the people in Nepal had access to telecommunication services.

Ncell is the first company to make a video call from the top of Mount Everest. Or almost the top. The call actually took place at 17,388 feet, which is the elevation of the base camp. Ncell is a joint venture of TeliaSonera and local investors.

With the 3G connection, people will be able to surf the web, make video calls, send video clips and stay connected through email and social networking. Ncell hopes to continue to expand its coverage area over the next year.

When you hear that a company receives millions of dollars of stimulus funds, you might think most of it is going to go into the company’s own pockets. But that may not be the case for Networks East, a local North Carolina business that is going to be working to improve high speed Internet access throughout the state. The company will be using $58 million to install the equipment to expand the coverage area for the company so that more people in North Carolina will have access to high speed Internet through satellite.

Currently, a large majority of residents in the state only have access to the Internet via dial-up connections. This negatively affects their ability to use the Internet to its full capacity. The company plans to target underserved areas and defines this as areas where Internet speeds are 768 kilobits per second or slower.

In order to qualify for the grant, the company had to offer customers a one-year price guarantee for the rate. For $39.99 for the first month, the company will install the equipment necessary for a household to tap into the high speed Internet network. The company plans to offer the service until the grant money runs out; however, it anticipates that the funds will be able to help all areas of the state.

Most of the areas that will classify as underserved are rural communities, and many feel the new system will be a boon for the communities. As La Grange’s economic development director, Mark Pope believes having a higher speed Internet connection will help rural residents be more attractive to employers. Some rural residents think it will also help them find newer job opportunities faster.

Regardless of how residents plan to use the connection speed, many think appreciate the grant and the boost in local technology.

The process is able to transfer high speed broadband at 100Mbit/second and would be able to carry digital TV signals, too.

FTTA is actually a spin off from research done by the French military to help fighter pilots improve their targeting systems. The design was a real-time video analysis. Using this research, Bluwan was able to create a civil application, which may be just what towns like Gap need. FTTA uses radio frequency to deliver the broadband signal.

The low-cost alternative would need to connect a radio transmitter in the mountains near Gap. Bluwan would be able to connect the transmitter to a TV mast in the area. This transmitter would then connect with the closest fiber connection, which is 22 miles away. Once the transmitter receives the signal, it would broadcast the broadband connection. To access the Internet, people would need have a receiver, similar to the way satellite connection work.

Once upon a time, people could only rent videos from an actual brick and mortar video store. You got into your car, drove to the location and spent way too much time looking for the right movie.
