Cisco Casts A Broader Net

Cisco is attempting to change the way we communicate. They call it IRIS (Internet Routing In Space), and it is exactly what it sounds like–space-based routers. Currently, internet access is largely dependent on the presence of ground-based (terrestrial) receivers and routers. Satellites are an out-dated part of this system, functioning on circuit switching technology. This system creates a temporary connections between communications nodes that mimics an electrical circuit. The result is a “bent pipe” connection, which is slow and inefficient.

IRIS changes this system my updating the circuit switching system to a normal internet protocol (IP) router, the same kind used when establishing normal internet connections. While the concept may not seem revolutionary, creating a router durable and powerful enough to function in space has taken several years of work. Testing will continue for the next twelve months to ensure the viability of IRIS. Government and commercial agencies have already presented Cisco with draft contracts for the use of the technology.

Benefits of IRIS

1. Wider coverage for wireless devices. Receiver/transmitter towers and peer-to-peer routers are still the primary means of accessing the internet wirelessly. IRIS is capable of establishing direct connections between wireless devices and terrestrial computers. Think of it like an express lane on a highway.

2. Direct connection. This direct connection provides security and stability for sensitive government and private commercial applications. Of course, this priority service is still too expensive for the general public.

3. Faster service, less latency. Circuit switching technology is only capable of transferring kilobits (Kbit) of data. Whereas the new IP router will transfer in Megabits (Mbit).

4. Eliminates the need for a teleport. An artifact of circuit switching technology, teleports cost money to set-up and maintain.

Internet Access Options

Even if you weren’t around to hear it, you know what a dial-up internet connection sounds like. Movies and commercials are rife with jokes about the antiquated internet access technology. Most people have switched to a more updated connection and left it at that. But with separate service and data plans for your cell phone, home computer and mobile devices it may be time to cut back on the expenses and go back to basics-or take out a third mortgage.

Dial-Up
This is the oldest and most widely used type of internet connection. It works by connecting a computer to an Internet service provider (ISP) using an analog modem and POTS (plain old telephone system). Even though cable and satellite internet have since expanded their coverage, dial-up still supports a large number of customers in remote regions. Dial-up service is inexpensive to set-up and maintain; and the existing POTS infrastructure is extensive, making internet access through dial-up widely available. However, the average speed is only 56 kbps. This makes dial-up too slow for certain activities such as online gaming and video streaming.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
DSL internet uses the same physical network as a dial-up connection but produces speed from 256 kb to 24 mb per second.

T1
T1 lines use existing POTS infrastructure as the framework for laying fiberoptic or copper cabling. This cable must be physically connected to a network router to create a connection making it an expensive service to obtain. However a t1 line may support data rates up to 1.544 megabits per second.

Cable
Cable connects consumers using a radio frequency signal similar to the over-the-air (radio-wave) method used in traditional television broadcasting. This signal is transmitted to the computer or web-enabled device physically, through fixed optical fibers or coaxial cables located on-site. Cable internet can be expensive as it requires the use of a transmitter near the subscriber; the subscriber essentially pays for the maintenance and upkeep of this tower.) Also this technology is not able to conquer the problem of “the last mile” providing access to individuals in remote locations.

Participants of the tea party have never really been ones to publicly announce their identities, though they will often join together to protest. While they rarely happen to congregate at shipping yards these days, the tea party is alive and well and thriving in its ambiguity, in part because of the Internet.

Overall, the goal of the Tea Party seems to be to spread unrest among the population regarding the current political figure. While Obama has recently been under attack, it’s important to remember that the Tea Party acts the way it does regardless of who holds the presidential office. It also appears that the Tea Party isn’t even sure who its own members are. Some will point to organizations like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce while other will target an individual.

If the Tea Party wants to harness the power of the Internet, it is going to have to do a better job of uniting its members. This doesn’t mean that people will have to provide their phone numbers, physical addresses, or real names, but it does mean the party will need to determine a common goal for the organization. It needs to set an agenda and wage its war based on that rather than on whimsy. If the Tea Party manages to do this, it may succeed in doing what other organizations have failed to do since the onset of the Republicans and Democrats. It may become the next political party.

• While all cell phones have text messaging capabilities, smartphones can communicate and synchronize with your email accounts. Some can even handle multiple accounts.

There are many situations in which lag can create significant problems. Voice over internet protocol use, video chatting, and gaming are the most common. While the amount of lag you have will often make doing these things either viable or totally impossible, there are still ways you can fine tune your bandwidth use in order to make the lag as marginal as possible. Some of these are tricky, some of them you will need to be cautious about – but all of them have a chance to decrease that threatening ms latency that threatens to disrupt your audio conversations, or lose you your next game of Counter Strike.

Thing #1: Focus Bandwidth

This is a commonly known way to increase your internet oomph, but it’s also the best place to start. Your latency, unless you’re using satellite internet or have a shoddy wireless router, is probably due to a bandwidth issue. If you are using too much compared to how much you have available, lag will happen. Make sure that you don’t have extra computers running internet software during your gaming time, save piracy for afterward, and otherwise reduce the number of devices connecting to your internet.

Thing #2: Reduce System Processes

Your computer isn’t just running your game. In fact, it’s probably running a few dozen processes, which all take their share of computer resources. Maximizing computer resources will, in and of itself, increase your game performance. However, it should be noted that many of these processes also take some small degree of your internet space. Background applications that check for updates, communicate to online servers, or otherwise tap into the power of the internet, all have the potential to slow you down. Close as many as you can, either using the extended services panel or MSConfig startup options for your computer. NOTE: Don’t do this if you’re clueless as to what you’re doing.

Thing #3: Disable Your Antivirus

ONLY do this if you are confident in your ability to protect your computer, and you understand the risks. Understanding that, your antivirus is one of the biggest bandwidth drains running in your background.

In the world of wireless internet communication, there are four letters that have some significance: B, G, and N. However, despite the fact that most people realize that these make for a difference of some kind, only the more educated internet users have any idea what that difference is. Prepare to join the “more educated” group.

Unlettered wireless, the original wireless format, provided the baseline for the wireless field. It could transfer a data bit rate of up to 2 bits per second, and had an indoor range of up to 66 feet. It functioned on a 2.4Ghz frequency – the same as just about everything else that’s wireless. Luckily, the wireless technologies have moved forward.

Wireless B came next, with up to 11 megabits per second, or just over five times the maximum transfer rate of original wireless. The maximum indoor range also exploded, reaching up to 125 feet with a relatively clear signal. Wireless B came about in 1999, two years after the invention of the original wireless cards, and still functioned on the 2.4Ghz frequency. It didn’t stop there, however.

Wireless G was dropped off by the stork in 2003, and sported connection rates of up to 54 megabits per second. The range didn’t change much, and the frequency didn’t change. Still, the speeds were becoming pretty decent. 54 megabits per second equates to a maximum download speed of about seven megabytes per second.

Wireless N started to change things in 2009, and it is currently the reigning champion of the wireless world. Its maximum transfer rate reaches 150 megabits per second, or almost twenty megabytes per second, when it is functioning on a 5Ghz frequency. This versatile network can function on either 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz frequencies, allowing for maximum compatibility with older devices. With either 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz, the range is double that of B/G wireless. The 5Ghz frequency, however, is more resistant to wireless interference.

Latency, more commonly known as “lag,” is the worst enemy of PC gamers worldwide. What is latency?

Latency is the delay between sending a request to your internet network and receiving a response. It covers a huge variety of potential kinds of delays related to hardware and internet service. “Low latency” is the qualification given to a network with minimal delays, but can vary greatly in actual technical abilities. Latency is measured in milliseconds, and what is “bad” or “good” latency will vary dependent on your activity. What isn’t latency?
