The Android operating system seems to be taking over the smartphone lead. If you have a preferred carrier, chances are they offer an Android phone. Since technology and communication are going mobile, your search is not for which plan offers Android, but which Android offers the best internet capabilities.

An Option for Everyone

Google rules the Internet, so it’s no surprise that Android would rule the cell phone universe. There are many choices from every manufacturer. This hot, new operating system is saturating the market with it’s latest advancements to the 4G network. Samsung, Motorola and HTC come up on everyone’s top Android phone lists.

If the lightening pace of technology feels like it’s going to out price your budget, start off with a prepaid cell phone that won’t put a long-term dent in your pocketbook. You may want to try out a few plans and cell phones before you invest in one you’ll keep for awhile.

What Kind of Features Will Matter?

As you give various phones a try, think about what kinds of features matter most to you. Here are a few that the experts measure:

Speed

Improved battery life

Best Apps

Hardware features such as processors

Screen size and graphics

Plan features and pricing

When you finally make the long-term purchase and sign up for a plan, make sure that the features on your phone will keep it robust and current long enough to outlast the speed of technology. As long as you’re getting what you need from its internet capabilities, you should be able to withstand the break neck advancements in technology.

Smart phones have quickly supplanted the traditional no-frills cell phone as the “must have” gadget of today’s techno-savvy business people, parents, students and everybody in between. There are smart phones that let you post simultaneously to multiple networking sites, phones that offer 2-way video calls, and phones that are part computer and part personal secretary. Here’s a look at how today’s smart phones can benefit different kinds of people.

Business people obviously benefit from having smart phones. These phones let them sync their schedules with the office or schedule meetings. They can send remote emails, check in with the family and even find a local restaurant for lunch with a client. Business people can scan Canada 411 to find whatever they’re looking for, from just about anywhere they are.

Moms are busy people, too. Smart phones can help moms manage the house, kids and family. These phones won’t just help keep everybody’s schedules straight, but they can also hold grocery lists, check bank balances and make appointments with the dentist.

Students benefit from smart phones in ways different from other people, and not just for storing the personal information of vast numbers of friends. Students can have complicated schedules with homework and projects due at various times, club meetings, extra-curricular activities and sports events all making claims on their time. Smart phones can let them keep all these activities on schedule and will even allow them time for a video call home from the other side of the country.

There’s no doubt that smart phones have a universal appeal; there are smart phones for just about anybody from every walk of life.

One of the biggest things to happen to the Internet has easily been wireless Internet. Wi-Fi has made such a huge impact for people all over the country. While there are so many great things about having Wi-Fi, there are a few disadvantages.

For those unfamiliar, Wi-Fi means you can access the Internet from anywhere that has Wi-Fi thanks to a piece of hardware or wireless card in your computer. This will allow users to surf and use the Internet without having to be plugged into a modem.

The biggest advantage of having Wi-Fi is that you won’t have to be connected to your router in order to get onto the Internet. You can bring your laptop just about anywhere in your home and you won’t have to worry about the annoying chord.

Wi-Fi can be really inexpensive to have set up since all that’s needed to be done is wiring your main router. If you have an Internet network already on the computer and ready to go, getting the Wi-Fi is pretty easy.

While having Wi-Fi can make your Internet go a lot faster, the drawback is that there are a ton of users trying to get onto the network, which can create a few outages. Not to mention the further you are from the router, the slower your Internet is.

Another issue could be security. While you’re at home, there aren’t many security issues. It becomes an issue when using a public network, even one that’s password-protected. With a public computer, many websites could be blocked if they pose an issue. This becomes more of a problem to someone using his or her own computer on a public network at work or school.

Wi-Fi is a great innovative tool for Internet users, but there are a few drawbacks to it. It’s always best to know the good and the bad about a product before purchasing it.

Just about everyone is on the Internet these days and no one wants to deal with a slow connection. Remember the olden days of dial up? Those days are long over thanks to high speed Internet. With wireless high speed Internet, not only will you not have to deal with the long chord, you will no longer have a super slow Internet Connection.

Thankfully wireless high speed Internet is easy to come by whether you’re at home, work or school with a wireless router. Here are ways of accessing wireless high speed Internet.

Wireless connection from home

Once you’ve contacted your Internet Company and decided on whether or not you want cable, DSL or satellite, you will have a few packages to choose from. Choose the best option for you.

If your modem isn’t wireless, connect it to your wireless router and turn it on. Turn your computer on and hit the button on bottom right corner that should say, “view available wireless networks” and click that option. This is where you’re going to put in the password that was created when the Internet was first set up.

Wireless connection from work or school

Most people bring their laptops to work or school if the building has wireless high speed Internet. Connecting from work or school is no different than connecting to your wireless high speed Internet from home. Simply turn on your computer and check the option that says, “view available wireless networks.” Pick the connection that’s available, there should only be one option.

Wireless high speed Internet is available at many coffee shops, libraries, stores and many other places. When you turn on your computer, check for available wireless networks and you’re good to go. Places like these will offer free Wi-Fi so you won’t have to worry about stealing someone’s Internet connection.

One of the great things about having a laptop is that you can take it anywhere. However, while that’s a great feature, one of the drawbacks is that your laptop isn’t able to access wireless internet wherever it goes. The only place that you will be able to log on to the internet is where wireless internet is offered. These are places such as the library, internet cafes, Starbucks and other remote locations featuring this free service to you, and when the service is free there is always a chance of extra files being downloaded. This can cause your memory to be taken up, so before taking advantage of free WiFi cloud storage might be something to consider.

The fact that laptops can’t access wireless internet everywhere is irritating when you consider that the iPhone has wireless internet service virtually anywhere it goes. Well, the good news is that there are a couple ways you can bring wireless internet to your laptop no matter where you are! You just need to decide which one is the best for you.

Use Your iPhone: If you have an iPhone then you do have the ability to get wireless internet to your laptop. There are several applications out there that will give your iPhone the ability to transform itself into a modem for your laptop. However, keep in mind that to access these apps, you will most likely have to jailbreak your iPhone 3.0 first. But, if you have an iPhone 4.0, internet tethering is supported by AT&T when you purchase the Tethering Plan for an additional $20 a month.

Purchase an Internet Air Card: If you don’t have an iPhone, these little gadgets are great for accessing wireless internet on your laptop. Companies like AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and Sierra Wireless all have air cards that allow laptops to access wireless internet. However, before you purchase an air card, take the time to analyze how much internet usage you require and how much your budget will allow. For example, some air cards allow you two to five megabytes and others only allow 250 gigabytes. Naturally, the price varies for these air cards too. You may be looking at $40 a month or $80 a month – all depending on how much data usage you need. So, make your decision carefully!

Satellite internet is a great option for those that are unable to get internet through other methods. Usually, these are people that live out in the country where internet providers are unable to go. However, before you decide to get satellite internet, it is important that you understand the disadvantages in advance to save yourself a lot of frustration later on.

Price: First, the price of satellite internet can be considerably more than what other internet providers offer. This is because you have to pay for special equipment to be installed. You are also paying for the actual internet service, which is a special convenience since no other internet provider is able to service you.

Time Delay: While satellite internet is much better than dial-up internet service, there is still a bit of a time delay with it. This is natural because of the distance the satellite waves have to travel in order to bring you the information you’re searching for. Generally, the delay is only a few seconds, which isn’t much at all. However, for those that enjoy playing online games, this can be huge. So, be sure you understand the time delay issue if you expect to play an internet game that requires high-speed internet service.

Interference: While any internet service can experience temporary interference, satellite internet is just a little more susceptible to it. This is because it’s a satellite and the satellite has to send waves of information thousands of miles to the satellite home base and back before the website is viewable on your computer screen. So, understand that when you are experiencing bad weather it is quite possible your internet service may be unavailable.

Fair Access Policy: Satellite internet service is subject to the Fair Access Policy, which means that you are limited to the amount of internet bandwidth you can use a day. This is set up to give each satellite internet user the same amount of time online. Therefore, the satellite company can restrict your internet usage. Just be sure you read and understand the Fair Access Policy before subscribing.

As of 2010, the world is a technological planet full of people that rely on the internet to connect with others all over the globe for both their personal and business needs. Not only does the internet help us perform basic functions and job tasks, but it now also helps us get from point A to point B with GPS, play online video games a host of other things as well. Thus, we need the internet to be fast. Wireless internet service does just that.

At first, dial-up internet service was great because it was the only thing we knew. However, times have changed, and thankfully, so has our internet services. We now have the option to get internet through satellite, DSL, cable and also through wireless internet too. Out of the previous four options, wireless internet has some great benefits that the others don’t offer.

Affordability: For the service you are getting, wireless internet is the best option to go with as it costs a lot less than satellite internet. When you compare it to DSL and cable, wireless internet connections have the ability to bring in more information at a faster speed. Usually with DSL, and sometimes even through cable internet providers, you have to pay more for faster broadband speeds.

Speed: Wireless internet service has the ability to provide users with extremely fast service. In fact, wireless internet can bring close to 2 megabytes of data within a second! This is a major deal for those that use the internet for business purposes such as video conferences. It’s also a much needed feature for online gamers as well.

Mobility: The most obvious benefit of wireless internet service is the fact that it allows you to move around and still access it. Some people don’t see the need to be mobile while online, but it is actually a really nice feature to have. It gives you the freedom to take your computer to any room in the house, or even out on the patio!

Pretty much anyone that owns a computer has heard of Spyware before. However, many people have no idea what Spyware is and how it is related to the internet. Basically, the term”Spyware” is used loosely to describe any type of software that has been downloaded or installed on your computer that tries to carry out certain actions. These actions can be popping up unwanted advertisements, compromising your computer’s configuration or even gathering various types of information about you through the files on your computer.

The way the internet is involved with Spyware is because the internet is usually Spyware’s vehicle into your computer. Spyware is a threat to you because it can be installed on your computer without you even noticing it’s there, for instance when you are downloading or using a driver update. The most common way Spyware gets installed on your computer is when you download another type of internet software or file. For example, it can be attached to video and music files. While most people think all Spyware is sneaky and unwanted, there are actually some Spyware programs that you unknowingly agree to when you download something from the internet.

So, how do you know if Spyware has been installed on your computer and what can you do to prevent it? There are several signs of Spyware infected computers. These signs include extra toolbars appearing on your screen, more pop-up advertisements than normal, a slow running computer and, in the worst cases, computers that crash quite often. If you suspect your computer has fallen victim to an internet Spyware program, then take it in and have it checked out by a computer technician.

The best way to protect your computer from an internet Spyware program is to try to prevent it before it happens. All you have to do is go to your local Best Buy, Target or WalMart and shop the computer aisle to find a good anti-spyware program. These programs run regular checks to make sure your computer isn’t infected. Another form of prevention is reading all disclosures before downloading anything off the internet as some Spyware programs are actually disclosed.

The technology behind VoIP is really cool because what it actually does to make this work, is it takes your voice and then sends it out through the internet in the form of a digital signal. Isn’t that amazing? There are several ways you can make your phone calls using the Voice over Internet Protocol technology. These include: using a VoIP phone, through a VoIP adapter attached to a regular phone or through your computer! As if that isn’t cool enough, if you use VoIP through your computer, then you may have the ability to even use it when you’re able to access wireless internet service, regardless of where you are!

As with any type of technology that requires the use of the internet, there are certain things you must have before you can take advantage of VoIP phone services. The first, is a high-speed internet connection. This is not negotiable. It is a necessity.

While having high-speed internet service for VoIP is non-negotiable, the way you actually place your calls is. Depending on the provider you contract with, you may have the option to use your computer, regular phone or the VoIP special phone. However, this all depends on who your VoIP provider is as they each have their own requirements.

The one thing you need to pay special attention to when researching the different Voice over Internet Protocol providers is their terms and conditions. You need to understand who you can call and who can call you. While you can generally call other VoIP users, you may be charged, or unable, to call non-VoIP subscribers. VoIP is a great service, but always read and understand the fine print before you commit.

Voice over Internet Protocol is an awesome service that has a lot of great features for subscribers. The reason VoIP isn’t used more frequently is because the idea of using the phone over the internet seems radical to a lot of people. However, when one looks at the advantages associated with VoIP phone service, it may change his or her viewpoint.

Cost: The amount of money you will save when you switch to VoIP is the advantage that people enjoy the most. Traditional phone companies like to “nickel and dime” you to death, but when you use the internet to make phone calls the fees aren’t nearly as outrageous. The key to saving the most money possible with VoIP is to find the internet provider with the most suitable package for your needs. If a lot of your family and friends have VoIP, then it may be practical to get a more traditional plan that allows you to talk to other VoIP users for free. So, take the time to research different VoIP plans to ensure you maximize the amount money you will save.

Mobility: One of the things a lot of people don’t know is that they can generally take their VoIP service with them. This is because it works through the internet! Therefore, if a high-speed wireless internet connection is in the area, most times you will be able to use your VoIP service!

Streamlining: An awesome advantage of using your computer for VoIP communications is the ability to streamline your internet activities. You can surf the web, check your emails and do other online activities while you’re on the phone. You can also share online information with the person you’re talking to, and sometimes you can even see the person you’re talking to by using a webcam. Pretty cool, huh?

While Voice over Internet Protocol has some pretty cool and unique advantages, it is like everything else and also has disadvantages as well. The mistake many people make when they sign up for any service is that they don’t thoroughly research the service before signing their name on the dotted line. VoIP is a great service and may benefit your family in many ways, however, please investigate the disadvantages below before your make your final decision.

Sound: There isn’t a proven way to get around the sound issue surround VoIP phone service. This is because your voice is broken down digitally so that it can travel across the internet to the person on the other end of the phone. However, there are many people that will tell you they’ve never had a problem with the sound quality of their VoIP service. So, while it may not be an issue for you, just be aware that is the biggest issue surrounding VoIP phone service.

Lag Time: In addition to poor sound quality, you may experience some lag time while using VoIP to communicate. This has to do with the fact that your computer is sending large voice files over the internet. The lag time shouldn’t be like what you would experience if you had satellite internet, but it will still be noticeable. So, be prepared for this too.

Equipment: The only equipment you will need that is absolutely necessary is a connection to high-speed internet and the appropriate receiver to communicate with. This may be your computer, regular phone (with a VoIP adapter) or a VoIP phone. However, many people have found that to help with the sound and lag time issues, it is necessary to have updated equipment, especially if you are primarily using your internet to make phone calls.

Interference: Since the internet is the way VoIP functions, you won’t have access to VoIP if your internet goes out. So, make sure you have good internet connections in different circumstances. While there isn’t much you can do to prevent this, being prepared for it will help tremendously.

The internet has helped thousands of individuals streamline their home and business lives in a variety of ways. This holiday season you can put your high speed internet connection to use once again. How? To complete your holiday shopping without having to leave the comfort of your house,or your pajamas!

While many holiday shoppers have used the internet here and there to help complete their Christmas gift lists, there are still many who are shopping the old-fashioned way. There isn’t anything wrong with supporting your local businesses during the holidays, however, if you are looking for gifts that can be found at any large retail chain, you can save yourself time, money and stress by using the internet to find these gifts! Below are just a few reasons to get online and shop this holiday season.

Money: While the holidays bring a lot of fun and excitement, they also bring financial stress on families as they struggle to buy gifts for everyone, as well as, extra groceries for all the holiday parties. Therefore, do yourself a favor and save some money by doing some of your holiday shopping through the internet. One of the great things about high speed internet is that you are able to quickly browse various stores and find the best deal for any single item, which guarantees you will save money!

Reduce Stress: Fighting the crowds during the holidays is no fun and can actually be downright stressful. This is especially true when sales are going on. However, did you know that, most of the time, in-store sales are also offered on the store’s website? So, get on the internet and buy the same sale item without having to physically push your way through the crowds like everyone else.

Variety: Variety is something else you get with internet shopping. Your local stores can only keep so many items in stock. The internet, on the other hand, carries everything! This gives you a lot more freedom when shopping for the perfect Christmas gift!

In the fast-paced world of technology, we have quickly outgrown the dial-up days of the internet. However, there are still many people that use dial-up. You may even be one of them. Well, there are many benefits that come from upgrading to a broadband connection. One of them is the fact that you can easily set up a wireless router in your home and not have to mess with being “hooked up” to your internet source at all times.

Not only will the wireless router provide you with internet access from anywhere in your house, but you will also be able to link your computer to your smart phones and easily transfer information that way as well. That may not seem extremely beneficial, but if you need to print a document and don’t want to get up and get on the computer, your wireless router will allow you to do that from your phone when you have a wireless enabled printer. Those are just a couple of the benefits of having a wireless router. However, before you can begin reaping the benefits, you need to find the right wireless router for you!

Finding the right wireless router can be time-consuming, but it’s important that you consider a variety of things to ensure you will be happy with the router you choose. Below are a few things to consider when shopping for routers.

-Usage: Will you be using your home internet service just to browse the web and do simple tasks, or do you need it for online gaming and more complex uses? This will also help you determine whether you need a single or dual band router.

-Range: If you will need a router to cover more than 180 feet while indoors, then you may need more than one router.

-Features: Research the different routers and the features they offer. Then, determine which ones are the most important to you. For example, do you need a router that has USB ports? If so, then mark it down as a “must-have.”

While wireless internet connections are becoming more and more common on the home front, many business owners are still dragging their feet to go wireless at the office. A lot of this has to do with the fact that old habits are hard to break. However, there are many benefits that can come from having an office operating with a wireless internet connection. Below are just a few.

No More Bulky Cords: For many people, the fact that wireless internet eliminates the need for a bunch of unsightly cords is a huge benefit. While it may seem like a small benefit, it really is one of the best benefits of going wireless.

It’s Cheaper: Obviously, when the old networking systems were installed on business computers it cost more. This is because each and every computer required its own set of special cords that had to be specially wired before all the computers could communicate with each other. This cost business owners more because it took longer to install and the business owner also had to pay for all those special cords. With a wireless internet connection the time it takes to install it is much less and there are no extra expenses associated with cords and wires.

Increased Production and Flexibility: The greatest benefit of having a wireless internet connection at the office is the increased production and flexibility it provides employees. Employees will have more flexibility in regards to how they can complete their work, which leads to an increase in work production. For example, an employee can easily take her computer with her into a business conference and send a message to her secretary if she needs a report immediately. This saves both her and those in the meeting time because they don’t have to wait for her to leave the room and walk down the hall to get it from the secretary. Instead, it can be emailed to her within a minute. This convenience isn’t possible without a wireless internet connection.

Wireless networking is a relatively new concept for many homes and businesses, but it is certainly one worth exploring. With the addition of affordable wireless routers, systems that come equipped with wireless adapters, and more and more wireless devices such as printers and cellular phones coming out each day, the advantages of setting up a wireless network in your home are stacking up. However, there are still some drawbacks. Here are the ups and downs of this networking alternative.

On the “good” side of the scale . . .

The mobility of the network allows anyone to access it from anywhere inside your home, or even immediate outside of it.

You don’t have to be right next to a printer or other device to tap into it as a resource.

You can reduce the number of cords you need to purchase, set up, and have around.

Setup is relatively simple when compared to a wired home network. You can simply plug into the router or other wireless station and use the wireless installation wizard that comes with your computer in order to create a fundamentally sound network.

On the “bad” side of the scale . . .

The speed of your network will be lower when compared to a fully wired network. While wireless is getting faster, it’s not “there” yet.

Wireless networks are far less reliable than wired networks, and you can get spots, downtime, and other errors more easily in a wireless network.

Wireless networking won’t work very well for specific tasks such as gaming, where the lag that occurs can create significant problems.

The cost of a wireless network, while decreasing, is high when compared to a fully wired network. In addition to the cost of the router and adapters for computers, wireless versions of printers or other utilities are more costly.

Neither wired nor wireless home networks are a bad idea, and each provides certain opportunities and drawbacks. The best approach is to evaluate your home, your priorities for mobility, cost, and ease of setup, and make the best decision to suit your particular situation.

So, you’ve decided that you want to try to install your satellite internet yourself. This is an admirable task, and certainly will be a challenge for you, unless you’re a trained and licensed technician. Whether you were looking for an interesting hardware project to spend your day on, or simply wanted to save some money on installation, there are a few tips that you can follow in order to make your life easier:

Check your coordinates. Okay, now check them again. Done? Okay, one more time.

Your internet speed is going to rely completely on the coordinates that you’re using, and how accurately you configure them. The coordinates indicate an appropriate line of sight between the receiver and the orbiting satellite itself. A poor coordinate configuration will lead to little or no internet connectivity. If you don’t have coordinates, then you will want to contact your internet service provider in order to find them. Save this information in case you need to adjust it later.

Don’t get set on one installation location.

Sometimes trying to install the satellite receiver in the first place that seems convenient is a less than good idea. Sometimes it’s like trying to fit a square block through a triangle hole. Check out multiple potential areas for installation within your immediate location in order to find the right one for you. Be aware of natural features that may get in the way of connection, including how easily animals could topple the receiver itself.

Prepare your tools beforehand.

This isn’t a project for the handy person who only have a hammer in their belt pouch. You’re going to need drill bits of different sizes, a screw driver, and pliers at the ready.

Get educated on installation.

If your internet provider didn’t send you a pamphlet or installation guide, track one down. Once you have a guide, be sure to read it. Incorrectly connecting plugs, cables, or antenna will do more than make the installation more difficult. It can completely destroy your costly receiver equipment.

The rapid growth in Internet technology has created its own set of potential problems for end users. Going wireless is the preferred choice for many in this highly mobile world. Satellite technology makes the rapid delivery of content a relatively simple task. This ease of delivery does come at a price, more so for the end user than for the provider. No one escapes unscathed from the possible pitfalls of this modern technological convenience.

Common Wireless Connectivity Problems

The concept of Internet on the go caught on quickly with the advent of PDAs and smartphones. Some issues can be handled with basic troubleshooting techniques. Others may require the intervention of skilled computer engineers. Common issues encountered by both end users and providers include:

•Security breaches: Users are more vulnerable to attacks when using wireless signals, which can result in loss of personal information.
•Firewall: This necessary security feature can prevent wireless signals reaching its destination.
•Operating systems: Older operating systems (OS) are simply not equipped to handle this activity.
•Weather conditions: Bad weather conditions can interrupt wireless signals, resulting in no connectivity or connectivity that frequently fails.
•Slow speeds: Users can get dropped signal or low speed for a number of reasons including damaged ports and poor configuration.

Upgrading the software responsible for wireless connectivity or the operating system can provide the needed fix. Another solution may call for switching providers. Some companies simply perform better than others in this arena. Depending on the Internet Service Providers (ISP) equipment they may be better able to send wireless signals over mountains than others. Some research before signing up can sometimes help in avoiding problems commonly experienced by wireless users.

So called hot zones have become quite popular with end users. These zones allow wireless connectivity free for anyone with a device that can pick up the signal. Some users may unwittingly expose themselves to viruses and attacks by hackers in these areas. It is recommended that Wi-Fi feature on mobile wireless devices be turned off when not needed.

It is undeniable that Satellite internet is faster than dial-up in essentially every way. Satellite is also more accessible in remote locations, including in rural portions of the world that have no chance of DSL or Broadband deals, and even on RVs. However, it is also undeniable that not every internet based utility will work appropriately with Satellite. So, what does work on Satellite, and what doesn’t?

Things that Don’t Work

Satellite internet has a one word problem. “Latency.” Gamers are likely to know this term by the slang version, “lag.” This latency is the delay between the receiver requesting data and the satellite sending it down, across those twenty-three thousand miles between the two. The delay is really very minor, ranging from about 520 milliseconds to 840 milliseconds. In other words, it never even reaches a full second of delay. However, even this fraction of a second prevent certain activities.

Voice chatting and video chatting programs simply won’t work in this way, since the delay causes overlap issues that prevent the real time processing from functioning. Any real time program that requires real time internet access to function will be similarly hindered. Video games often fall into this category, especially if it is a multi player shooter, or any other game which requires real time response. Certain video games, such as MMORPGs, can be played with some effectiveness, although certain areas of the game will become either frustrating or impossible.

Things that Work

So, latency provides a major issue, but what happens outside the latency? Once the connection is established and the data is sent, the internet speed is comparable to broadband. This means that page load times will be low, but extended by the fraction of a second delay mentioned above, and that long downloads will be completed just as fast as they would be on broadband. Anything that doesn’t require a real time connection will function just fine, with that small delay being the only disadvantage of satellite when compared to broadband.

In the world of wireless internet communication, there are four letters that have some significance: B, G, and N. However, despite the fact that most people realize that these make for a difference of some kind, only the more educated internet users have any idea what that difference is. Prepare to join the “more educated” group.

Unlettered wireless, the original wireless format, provided the baseline for the wireless field. It could transfer a data bit rate of up to 2 bits per second, and had an indoor range of up to 66 feet. It functioned on a 2.4Ghz frequency – the same as just about everything else that’s wireless. Luckily, the wireless technologies have moved forward.

Wireless B came next, with up to 11 megabits per second, or just over five times the maximum transfer rate of original wireless. The maximum indoor range also exploded, reaching up to 125 feet with a relatively clear signal. Wireless B came about in 1999, two years after the invention of the original wireless cards, and still functioned on the 2.4Ghz frequency. It didn’t stop there, however.

Wireless G was dropped off by the stork in 2003, and sported connection rates of up to 54 megabits per second. The range didn’t change much, and the frequency didn’t change. Still, the speeds were becoming pretty decent. 54 megabits per second equates to a maximum download speed of about seven megabytes per second.

Wireless N started to change things in 2009, and it is currently the reigning champion of the wireless world. Its maximum transfer rate reaches 150 megabits per second, or almost twenty megabytes per second, when it is functioning on a 5Ghz frequency. This versatile network can function on either 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz frequencies, allowing for maximum compatibility with older devices. With either 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz, the range is double that of B/G wireless. The 5Ghz frequency, however, is more resistant to wireless interference.

After all, this once expensive category of devices is now becoming very affordable, and the additional mobility, the lack of clutter, and the chance to network in other devices more easily, all lead to great appeal. So, what wireless devices should you consider getting?

Wireless Mouse and Keyboard

The wireless effort can start right at your computer. A wireless keyboard and mouse are two of the most simple and affordable components, but they are highly advantageous. You will be able to remove the clutter around your desk, increase your ergonomics and general comfort, and easily move your work station. This includes moving your work station to other locations such as wireless hot spots. A portable mouse can network with whatever computer you choose to use for the day.

Headphones and Speakers

There are many business applications that require sound in order to provide their maximum benefit. These include VOIP programs and any program with audio instructions or elements, but the importance of music at work shouldn’t be discounted either. Wireless components here will allow for a full surround sound experience and the chance to walk away from your desk without disrupting your task.

Printer and Office Devices

A wireless printer is one of the best items to get in your home office, partially because it will allow anyone else who needs a printer to get their task finished without too much interference with your work flow.

Phones and Headsets

If phone calls are any major portion of your work day, then getting a wireless headset will make work a little more sanity friendly. Getting up to stretch your legs in the middle of a phone call may also give you a hidden opportunity for increase fitness!

Webcams and Microphones

Do you do video conferencing? Use a VOIP program? If so, you’ll get tons out of wireless webcams and mics, due to the simplicity of installation and how easy it makes your desk organization.

Remember, that any other devices that access the internet, including mobile phones, tablets, and other computers, can also become a part of your home office wireless network!

Bluetooth, first introduced by Ericcson in 1994, has seen growing popularity in recent years. The integration of computers, stand alone devices, cellular handsets, and far more, grants a greater ability to integrate than ever before. Bluetooth is one of the few technologies that successfully stands toe-to-toe with wireless internet, partially because the technology provides many personal and professional applications.

Bluetooth technology was popularized largely thanks to Bluetooth headsets. These allow for a completely hands-free connection between a cellular device and your headset. As the ideas became more popular, Bluetooth technologies were applied to computer and internet technologies. Since Bluetooth cellular phones were already equipped with the needed hardware, the first creative advances were in synchronizing phones and computers. This provided advantages in the rate of transfer, ease of setup, and took less bandwidth than a standard wireless network.

Once it was clear that computers could effectively communicate at a high rate of speed with Bluetooth devices, developers in a number of computer related fields began to take hold of the hardware, leading to a new world of possibilities. The most common seen in practical use today are direct communication devices like Bluetooth keyboards and mice. Bluetooth technologies have also seen success with printers and other office solutions, however. Computers equipped with Bluetooth can also communicate with each other, enabling Ethernet bridging, advanced wireless networking, and dial-up conenctions via data enabled handheld devices, primarily on cellular networks.

With new developers familiarizing themselves with the technology, it’s not surprising that other creative technologies have hit the market. Items that were previously based on serial or infrared communication, such as medical equipment, traffic controllers, hi-tech remotes, and more, all use Bluetooth. New video gaming is also centered around Bluetooth, at least as far as Wii, PS3, and PSP Go edition controllers are concerned.

While it may have taken Bluetooth a while to really hit the mainstream, this innovative medium has exploded in recent years. Most cellular devices currently come with Bluetooth equipped, computers frequently have it by default, and more outside devices use it. In brief: Bluetooth is here to stay.

Broadband connections in the form of DSL, Cable, and Satellite Internet can be found almost anywhere, and even Dial-up is hanging on like a mutant zombie. However, the advances in internet connection types and speed have made understanding the data transfer speeds more complex. Here is a brief guide on understanding the applicable terms.

Bits vs Bytes

All internet services will brag about their speed, and will let you know the maximum rate of transfer for data. This is frequently displayed in the X mbps form, where X indicates the number of “megabits per second.” This is confusing for many users, since “bits” are not the same as “bytes.” The term is no longer used frequently in other computer based technologies, and the exchange rate between bit and byte are no longer memorized. The simple story is that, before there were bytes, there were bits. This was when kilobytes were still a distant dream. A bit is just one-eighth the size of a byte. In order to find the maximum rate of transfer for your provider, all you have to do is divided those mbps by eight. The result is the maximum speed that a file can upload or download onto your computer, in megabytes.

Up vs Down

While your internet provider will brag about very high maximum speeds, it’s important to understand that this isn’t the speed for everything you do. Generally speaking, it’s the maximum speed for downloads, and uploads will be significantly slower. There is no set rule for how fast your downloads will be compared to your uploads, such as to FTP servers, in networking, or to voice chats. You will have to contact your ISP directly for the information.

Bandwidth vs Lag

Another common mistake that standard internet users make is to confused latency with bandwidth limitations. Latency, or the amount of time it takes your data to transfer to and from your ISP and/or router, creates an initial delay known as “lag.” Bandwidth limitations create ongoing slowness due to a lack of data streams from your internet provider.

With the vast majority of United States citizens having internet access, partially thanks to recent advancements in Satellite and Wireless internet technologies, it should be obvious that the web has vast appeal. You may already know exactly what you want the internet for (and shame on you!), but you should consider some other great activities on the web.

#5: Getting a New Job

The internet is an amazing resource for finding a job. With sites like Monster, Jobs.com, and even Craigslist, you can easily find more job opportunities in your area than ever before. The internet’s uses for finding a new job extend beyond that as well, though. You can educate yourself on putting together a resume, filling out applications, and acing the interviews, too.

#4: Advanced Chatting

Yes, email is spiffy, and instant messaging with groups like MSN can also be fun, but chatting has evolved. There are many free services, including Skype, Gmail chat with integrated voice and video, and more, all of which will allow you to chat with your friends in ways that strongly resemble what we saw in classic episodes of The Jetsons.

#3: A Free Word Processor

Google is the noble King of the internet world, and they’re also the first group that allowed for high-quality, free, online word processing and spreadsheet creation. You don’t need to download any software, install anything, or store any files. Everything is taken care of online through this completely pro bono service.

#2: Getting an Education

While it may not be as established as physical colleges, which go back a couple thousand years, online Universities are a very viable solution. They tend to be more affordable than physical colleges, provide more degrees and focuses, give you flexibility with your time, and provide a fully accredited and valued degree.

#1: Killing Time

This is the broadest and most common use of the Internet. There are unlimited time sinks on the internet. Some of the best of these are: social networking, online games, reading random Wikipedia topics, getting addicted to eBay, starting your own website or blog, and goofing off on Google Earth.

Here is a quick step-by-step on setting up your own home wireless network.

1. Set up your router.

You will need a wireless enabled router. Different types of routers have limits on how many devices can be connected, so research this information in advance. Once you have the router and have it connected, secure it with a password, and place it in the most central location possible in your home.

2. Plug things in.

If you will be connecting any devices with a wired connection, plug those in now. This may include computers that you want to have connect via Ethernet, but it can also entail devices that don’t have wireless hardware.

3. Plug in the wireless computers.

The simplest way to get your wireless connection rolling is by wiring it into the router first. This will make the rest of the process much more simple.

4. Go into the Windows Wizard

Now that you’re plugged in, we will want to get into the standard Windows configuration wizard. To do this, go to “Start” in the bottom-left hand side of your screen. Now click “Control Panel.” Within “Control Panel,” select “Network and Internet Connection,” then “Wireless Network Setup Wizard.” The exact location of this wizard may vary dependent on your version of Windows. Once you have selected this, follow the step-by-step directions to create a wireless connection with the devices you want your computer to have access to. Some version of the wizard will also allow you to create a USB “automatic setup” drive to simplify the process in the future.

5. Connect devices independently.

Many devices come with the ability to access this wireless LAN on their own. This includes anything with a major graphic user interface, such as tablets (think iPad) and mobile smart phones. The exact procedure will vary dependent on the device, but many of these will allow you to connect to the network by progressing through a simple setup wizard.

The vast majority of wireless networks are now secured – a significant change from five years ago. However, some people still haven’t taken the ten minutes required to secure their network. While it may seem like a minor inconvenience to not have this security, there are many reasons why this security is important. Here are five of the most significant.

One: Your Bandwidth Use is Increased

It should be obvious that your total bandwidth use will go up with more users. As there is only a certain amount of total bandwidth that you’re alloted, it’s important to keep your bandwidth under control to maximize your speeds.

Two: Your Router Will Be Mad at You

There are multiple points at which your internet speed are limited. Beyond the bandwidth issues mentioned above, you should keep in mind that even the best wireless routers have limitations. If more people are accessing the router, it’s more likely to overload, slow down, require hard resets, and be generally problematic.

Three: Your Files May Be Vulnerable

A savvy hacker will be able to access other devices and computers on the network if you haven’t engaged in appropriate security. This means, among other things, that private documents, pictures, and files will be vulnerable.

Four: You Can Get Locked Out

If you don’t set a password for your network, anyone else can. It isn’t required that they plug into your router in order to access it as an administrator. If you haven’t gone through a setup, set an administrator username and password, and so forth, then anyone who taps into your network can go into your control panel and lock you out of your own web.

Five: You May Be Supporting Crime

If other people are accessing your wireless network, you have no control over what they’re doing. Every foul thing that can happen on the internet, ranging from harmless music pirating to child pornography to illegal gambling rings can be happening using your internet. In addition to being terrible in and of itself, there are legal liability issues that you will have to face if these activities are traced to your IP address.

These include avoiding having your web used for illegal purposes, keeping your files secure, and keeping your web connection as fast as is possible. Luckily, securing your internet is simple and won’t take much time. Here’s a fast step-by-step to get you through the process.

Step 1: Check for Instructions

While this guide will walk you through how to secure your network with or without special directions, it may be that your router comes with a simpler guide with a more user friendly interface that allows you to skip some of these steps. Check for that guide first, and follow its directions if possible.

Step 2: Connect to the web.

Hypothetically, you can access your router wireless before securing it. However, it’s a good idea to hard wire in with an Ethernet cable if you can. In any case, make sure it’s the only internet you’re plugged into.

Step 3: Open Command Prompt

You will need to enter the router’s IP address in order to access your control panel, but the IP address isn’t always going to be the same. You will find the IP address by opening command prompt. To open command prompt, go to the “run” feature of the Windows OS you are using and type in “CMD,” then hit enter.

Step 4: Get your router’s IP address

Now that Command Prompt is open, you will enter “ipconfig,” and push enter. Look at the text that has scrolled down, and find the “default gateway.” That’s the IP address for your router.

Step 5: Log Into Your Control Panel

Open up your preferred internet browser and enter the ip address into the address bar, then hit enter. You may be prompted to enter a username and password. Leave these blank if you don’t believe you have any, and push enter. If this doesn’t work, check your materials, information on the bottom of the router, and the support site for the router in order to find this information.

Step 6: Secure Your Network

Now select the appropriate “secure the network” command and follow the given directions.
