Living in rural areas isn’t always the best when it comes to the amount of options you get for high speed Internet. Many people living in the country don’t always get the best access to cable or even DSL. Up until the past year or so, people had to rely on dial-up that was really slow.  The good new is, people living in rural areas now have some options to choose from. You can now get high speed Internet in your super small town.

You could even think about getting satellite Internet. This is the type of option available to pretty much anyone that has the best view of the southern sky, even if you live in a remote area.

Getting your satellite receiver installed will probably cost you anywhere between $300 and $700. The service plan will end up costing you around $60 to about $100 a month. Just know that if it’s really cloudy or snowing like crazy, the Internet could be blocked.

Check to see if Wi-Fi is available in your area. In most rural areas this isn’t always available, but it wouldn’t hurt to find out if you can get Wi-Fi is an option for you. With Wi-Fi an antenna will be installed outside of your home and will receive a strong enough signal from a nearby tower a few miles away.

Another option would be to purchase a wireless broadband card. You could also get air or wireless data cards. This is a small modem that will be plugged into your computer via a card slot or USB. This is how you will be able to connect to the Internet, just like you would on a cell phone.

Getting high speed Internet isn’t always easy to do in a super small town, but it can be done. People in rural areas can finally get high speed Internet and can get rid of the annoying and slow dial-up connection.

Having high speed Internet will give you a better Internet connection than dial-up ever could. Setting up a wireless network for the Internet is a pretty simple task to do. All that’s needed is a wireless router that you will connect to the Internet. If it’s not included with the computer, you might need wireless cards.

To hook up your wireless high speed Internet, simply take the main source of the Internet provider and connect that to your modem, whether it’s a cable or phone jack.

Take your Ethernet cable and plug it into the output of your wireless router. Then take your router, plug it in and turn it on.

To configure your router, follow the manual that was included. This is where you’re going to log onto your ISP address and use the username and password given to you when the Internet was set up.

Next you’ll pick the name for your network and password. This is where you’re going to decide if you want to use your Wi-Fi, Mac computers automatically come with this feature, or your Wireless encryption.

To get into the wireless network settings from your computer, go to your control panel menu. You can also just right-click the icon on your task bar. The first step in finding the best deals on high speed Internet is to get all the information needed to compare prices and services from the different Internet providers out there. This will help narrow your search down quite a bit.

Always read reviews on the company and service. The last thing you’d want to do is get into a contract and spend $50 a month for Internet that is either really slow or doesn’t work. Not only will people be honest about the service, but they will also give you information about which services are the best and cheapest. Price is important, but crummy service isn’t worth any amount.

Give a few companies you’re interested in going with a call. Never go with the first person you talk to. Keep in mind you will be talking with sales people looking to make a sale. When talking to a sales person there are a few questions that you should ask: What packages do they have to offer, are there any current promotions going on, what will the price be after the promotion. Looking for high speed Internet for really cheap isn’t a difficult task. While price is important, the service should be a priority. While $10 a month is cheap for Internet, it wouldn’t be worth it if the service were horrible.

Just about everyone is on the Internet these days and no one wants to deal with a slow connection. Remember the olden days of dial up? Those days are long over thanks to high speed Internet. With wireless high speed Internet, not only will you not have to deal with the long chord, you will no longer have a super slow Internet Connection.

Once you’ve contacted your Internet Company and decided on whether or not you want cable, DSL or satellite, you will have a few packages to choose from. Choose the best option for you.

High-Speed Internet Infrastructure May Impact West Virginia’s Future Economy

When West Virginia received $126 million from a federal grant to build a high-speed Internet infrastructure, it decided to use the funds to extend the current telephone lines. However, this plan has come under attack by Citynet, a local telephone service provider. The company has created a website and is taking out ads to try to rally the residents of the state to pay attention to this issue.

According to Jim Martin, the CEO of Citynet, the state’s decision regarding the high-speed Internet infrastructure may cripple the state for years to come. His belief is that West Virginia needs to use the funds to build a middle-mile solution capable of delivering high-speed connectivity rather than relying on an outdated model.

From the moment Citynet learned about the state’s plan, it has been lobbying for changes. Martin has called the state and asked it to suspend using the grant; however, the state has not responded to the request. Citynet hopes the citizens will join with him to ensure the state uses the funds in a way that better incorporates the government’s plan for them.

Martin backs his support for a middle-mile solution by highlighting the benefits to Internet service, which include better quality, faster connection speeds, and higher capacity at a reduce rate. As a company awarded for bringing Internet solutions to areas with limited connectivity, Citynet may be in the best position to lead this fight.

The state was to use the grant, provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, to improve the Internet structure for over 700,000 households and 110,000 businesses. In its application for the grant, the state indicated it would be building a middle-mile infrastructure, which is exactly what Citynet hopes the state will do. However, the state amended it plan to focus on a “last-mile” program, which would benefit a publicly traded phone company, Frontier Communications, hoping to capture most of the business from the endeavor.

High Speed Internet Makes it to Mount Everest

With more and more devices offering wireless Internet service, people are begging to expect a connection no matter where they go—even if that’s on top of one of the tallest mountains in a region. Recently, a Nepal-based private telecom company installed 3G services at the base camp for Mount Everest. The installation, conducted by Ncell, is the first telecom company to set up 3G service in that area.

Every year, tens of thousands of people flock to Mount Everest and attempt to summit the 29,035-foot peak. For many, the journey is dangerous, and even professional mountain climbers can struggle with the ascent into such thin air. The ability to connect to the Internet on such a dangerous trek could be very beneficial for hikers.

Now, people can use high speed Internet to request help if they encounter problems. Families will no longer have to wait for love ones to reach check-in points before knowing how a particular stretch of the ascent or descent went. In some cases, the high speed Internet connection will cost less than making a phone call using a satellite connection. The service will also benefit locals in the Khumbu Valley who will have access to it. Prior to the installation, only one third of the people in Nepal had access to telecommunication services.

Ncell is the first company to make a video call from the top of Mount Everest. Or almost the top. The call actually took place at 17,388 feet, which is the elevation of the base camp. Ncell is a joint venture of TeliaSonera and local investors.

With the 3G connection, people will be able to surf the web, make video calls, send video clips and stay connected through email and social networking. Ncell hopes to continue to expand its coverage area over the next year.

Networks East Selected to Expand North Carolina High Speed Internet Network

When you hear that a company receives millions of dollars of stimulus funds, you might think most of it is going to go into the company’s own pockets. But that may not be the case for Networks East, a local North Carolina business that is going to be working to improve high speed Internet access throughout the state. The company will be using $58 million to install the equipment to expand the coverage area for the company so that more people in North Carolina will have access to high speed Internet through satellite.

Currently, a large majority of residents in the state only have access to the Internet via dial-up connections. This negatively affects their ability to use the Internet to its full capacity. The company plans to target underserved areas and defines this as areas where Internet speeds are 768 kilobits per second or slower.

In order to qualify for the grant, the company had to offer customers a one-year price guarantee for the rate. For $39.99 for the first month, the company will install the equipment necessary for a household to tap into the high speed Internet network. The company plans to offer the service until the grant money runs out; however, it anticipates that the funds will be able to help all areas of the state.

Most of the areas that will classify as underserved are rural communities, and many feel the new system will be a boon for the communities. As La Grange’s economic development director, Mark Pope believes having a higher speed Internet connection will help rural residents be more attractive to employers. Some rural residents think it will also help them find newer job opportunities faster.

Regardless of how residents plan to use the connection speed, many think appreciate the grant and the boost in local technology.

A Town Without Broadband

For the majority of people, the Internet is just another thing to take for granted. You can access it on your computer, from your Wi-Fi connection on your laptop, using a browser on your smartphone or by using an iPad or other mobile computing device. As difficult as it may be to believe, some areas still do not have access to broadband.

The unfortunate reality of this is more devastating than not being able to update your Twitter feed. The lack of technology causes other problems. Consider the town of Gap in the French Hautes-Alpes. At 2,400 feet above sea level, this area doesn’t have broadband because the cost is too prohibitive.

The lack of broadband connection also means the town will lose its TV signal when the country finishes converting to digital TV. That would be one more technological setback for Gap. Enter French start-up Bluwan. The company can offer broadband service to Gap at a fraction of the cost by using a technology it calls Fibre Through the Air (FTTA). The process is able to transfer high speed broadband at 100Mbit/second and would be able to carry digital TV signals, too.

FTTA is actually a spin off from research done by the French military to help fighter pilots improve their targeting systems. The design was a real-time video analysis. Using this research, Bluwan was able to create a civil application, which may be just what towns like Gap need. FTTA uses radio frequency to deliver the broadband signal.

The low-cost alternative would need to connect a radio transmitter in the mountains near Gap. Bluwan would be able to connect the transmitter to a TV mast in the area. This transmitter would then connect with the closest fiber connection, which is 22 miles away. Once the transmitter receives the signal, it would broadcast the broadband connection. To access the Internet, people would need have a receiver, similar to the way satellite connection work.
